In this 2-day itinerary, you will experience the best things in Jaisalmer. If you’re coming to India, it’s a must to include Jaisalmer in your trip. In 2 days, you will explore the best experiences from Jaisalmer Fort and Sam Sand Dunes to desert safaris and many more. I’m sharing my top experiences while traveling to this wonderful city. How to Reach Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is well connected by rail, road, and air. It’s easy to reach there by bus or train from cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur, or by plane from Delhi.
By Air: Jaisalmer has its own airport. Jaisalmer Airport is approximately 15 km from the city center. If you’re arriving from another country, then book a flight to Jaisalmer via Delhi.
Pro tip:- Since flights to Jaisalmer can be limited, check your connecting flight details carefully and allow ample time between your international and domestic flights.
By Train: Jaisalmer is well connected to major cities of India via train. If you want to experience a train journey, then book your tickets from 12Go (convenient for international travelers) or the official website of Indian Railways, IRCTC. There are direct trains to Jaisalmer via Delhi, and the journey takes approximately 16-18 hours.
By Road: You can come here by bus, as the city is accessible by bus through Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner. Book your tickets from a renowned travel agency so that you do not face any hassle during the journey.
By Car: If you like road trips, then a car is the best option. A private car along with a driver, as you can stop anywhere and take some rest during your journey. I did my journey with a private car as we visited other cities as well
Getting around Jaisalmer
It is best to explore Jaisalmer on foot, as many of the sightseeing places are close to each other except the Thar Desert. Your Day 1 itinerary does not need any vehicle except for Gadisar Lake, as it is 1.6 km away from Jaisalmer Fort.
You can either book a cab from local taxi operators, as there’s no Uber or Ola in Jaisalmer, or find auto-rickshaws anywhere in Jaisalmer. If you want to experience this place on your own, then you can rent a scooter or bike, which costs around INR 400-500.
And for the Day 2 itinerary, you will either have to hire a private taxi or rent a scooter (provided you can drive up to 50 km).
Pro tip:- Record a video of the scooter or bike before riding it to avoid any hassle, as scams are everywhere.
Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer
October to March: It is the best time to visit Jaisalmer, as the weather will be pleasant at this time. The temperature is between 24°C and 30°C. However, this is the peak season; you will get to see an immense crowd at this time.
So I suggest visiting in late October and early November (at this time you will witness fewer crowds due to festivals and wedding season). December and January are the peak seasons. And if you want to experience the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, then visit in February.
August to September: It is the second best time to visit the city. However, it remains hot even during the rainy season. The temperature lies between 33°C and 36°C.
2-Days Jaisalmer Itinerary
Day 1: Explore the fort, Havelis, and Gadisar Lake
On the first day, you can visit all the important sightseeing places of Jaisalmer and shop for souvenirs from the colorful markets of this Golden city.
1. Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort (also known as Sonar Quilla) was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Maharawal Jaisal Singh atop the Trikuta Hill. It is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site under the group of hill forts of Rajasthan. Entry inside the fort is free, but for some places, you may have to pay a small amount. The fort is made up of yellow sandstone, is known for its unique designs, and is one of the only surviving forts in the world.
When you enter this fort, you will feel that you’ve come to the ancient era. The fort houses several museums and art galleries, which showcase the history and culture of the region. Take time to wander the small lanes of the fort and immerse yourself in the different views of the fort. You can find various souvenirs at the shops located in the fort.
Timings: 9 AM to 5 PM
2. Cannon Point
Cannon Point offers the best views of the city. Located inside the fort, Cannon Point is free to visit. It’s a nice place to take a break and capture some beautiful views. Since the fort is itself at a height, Cannon Point is further high up inside the fort. As the name suggests, this place is home to old cannons that were used to defend the fort against attackers.
Pro tip:- If you are an early bird, then this place offers a mesmerizing view of sunrise.
3. Jain Temples
The Jain Temple is situated in the middle of Sonar Fort. This is a group of 7 temples that have been constructed with similar stones. These old temples were built between the 12th and 15th centuries. Jain Temple is dedicated to the ascetics of the Jain pilgrimage, which is an integral part of Jainism.
When you enter the courtyard of the temple, you will find immense pleasure and peace within you. Famous for their architectural style, the walls of these temples are decorated with beautiful paintings. Tourists can see Dilwara-style paintings, beautiful birds, and human figures on the walls of the temple.
Timings: 9 AM to 12 PM.
4. Patvon Ki Haveli
Patvon ki Haveli is a group of 5 havelis made up of yellow sandstone and built by wealthy merchants during the 18th and 19th centuries; now these have become a famous tourist attraction. In true Rajasthani style, these grand buildings are a work of exquisite artistry and craftsmanship.
These beautifully carved golden sandstone havelis are beautiful from the outside as well as from the inside; you will be blown away by their unique atmosphere. The paintings and glasswork inside the havelis will take you to a different world.
Apart from Patvon ki Haveli, you can enjoy visiting Nathmal ki Haveli and Salam Singh ki Haveli, which add immense charm to Jaisalmer’s aura.
Timings: 9 AM to 5 PM.
5. Gadisar Lake
Situated 1.5 km from Jaisalmer Fort, Gadisar Lake is one of the best relaxing and beautiful things to do in Jaisalmer. After having lunch, head to Gadisar Lake, which is also a sunset point. This lake reflects the history of Jaisalmer. Palaces, canopies, and temples are built on the banks of the river, which seem to be floating in the water; it looks mesmerizing and adds charm to its beauty.
Immerse yourselves in the calmness of the environment. A 30-minute boating ride will give you a closer look at the lake. When you come here in February, you will get to witness many migratory birds. If you want to catch a picturesque view of sunrise, then you can come here in the morning.
Timings: 6 AM to 6 PM.
6. Explore the local markets
Spend some time exploring the local markets of Jaisalmer. Located just outside Jaisalmer Fort, here you can find traditional crafts, Rajasthani textiles, home decor, and much more.

7. Enjoy Dinner at Rooftop Restaurant
After exploring places in Jaisalmer, the best way to relax is to spend some time at a rooftop restaurant. Order traditional Rajasthani food to satisfy your appetite while immersing yourself in amazing views of the fort. It is one of the most iconic things to do in Jaisalmer.
There are plenty of other restaurants where you can dine while immersing yourself in the view of the Jaisalmer Fort. When the cold breeze touches your face, you will feel some kind of paradise while having dinner.
Day 2: Explore Bada Bagh, Kuldhara Village, and Desert Safari
Grab lunch at a rooftop cafe and head to the next destination.
8. Bada Bagh
Bada Bagh is around 6 kilometers away from Jaisalmer, so it takes only a few minutes to reach here. The cenotaphs of Bada Bagh were built in memory of Rajasthan’s royalty. Located atop a hill, this site offers breathtaking views of the horizon and expanding desert.
In the evening, as the sun begins to set, the empty tombs or chhatris are bathed in orange light. This place is also famous for pre-wedding photoshoots. The views at sunrise and sunset are spectacular.
Timings: 8 AM to 6 PM
9. Kuldhara Village
Located around 18-20 kilometers from the main city of Jaisalmer, Kuldhara is an abandoned and cursed village and is considered one of the haunted places of Rajasthan.
It is believed that residents of Kuldhara village and 80 nearby villages abandoned their homes overnight in 1825 AD because of the atrocities committed by a Samant. But before leaving, they cursed the village that no one would be able to live here again.
The ruins of Kuldhara Village showcase the layout of roofless sandstone houses, narrow streets, open courtyards, and temple ruins, showing how well-planned this village once was. You will find here glimpses of old-century architecture.
Timings: 8 AM to 6 PM
10. Experience Thar Desert
A trip to Jaisalmer is incomplete without the Thar Desert and a camel safari. It is one of the best experiences in India and one of the most popular things to do in Jaisalmer. I feel you should get the experience that best suits your preferences. Camping at Sam Sand Dunes can be a bit overwhelming due to the heavy tourist crowds.
Sam Sand Dunes are touristy ones and quite popular among domestic tourists that include camel safaris, jeep safaris, dinners, and cultural programs. It is totally different from what you are seeking. And I’m pretty sure you won’t come here just to experience them.
Therefore, I suggest opting for a private tour. It might be a bit further away, but it will provide you with an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Helsinki House, Trotters Jaisalmer, Wanderlust Guesthouse, etc., offer you the best experience.
Many tour packages and hotels offer desert safaris at negotiable prices; therefore, I highly recommend you don’t fall prey to these offers. Do not book in advance. It will be a bit overwhelming to decide which one to pick. Prices can vary from INR 1500 to INR 3000, according to your budget.
Pro tip: It is important to do your research before booking a camel safari; do not book a camp online, as you can fall prey to scams.
11. Camel Safari, Sunset & Stargazing
Start your journey with a jeep safari, and then opt for a camel safari. Make sure the animal is in good condition. You can also discover the Thar Desert on foot, just as I did. After the jeep ride you can walk over the dunes and enjoy the sunset from there.
Get indulged in the magic of the dunes to the fullest. When the sun is about to set, the color of the dunes turns golden. This is a one-of-a-kind experience. Return to your private camp and enjoy a hearty meal. After that, step outside to dazzle by the blanket of thousands of stars.
You can also camp overnight near the small villages of the Thar Desert and sleep under the stars. Enjoy watching shooting stars at night while lying on a charpoy (cot).
